If your pet is your only ‘baby’ now, it will need some time to adjust to having another baby around. Here is how to make the transition easy.

Pets have feelings, too. If your pet is used to having all the attention in the world, it is bound to feel stressed when a new family member arrives and steals the spotlight. Luckily, there are a few steps you can take to make the transition easy on everyone in the family.

Start early. Let your pet start the transition process as early as possible. If you have a baby crib set up, discourage the pet from getting into it. Spay/neuter your pet if that has not been done yet, and schedule all necessary vaccinations and check-ups. See a behavior specialist if your pet has behavior issues.

Expose your pet. Invite your friends with kids over and see how your pet reacts. Always supervise any kind of pet-child interaction. Let your pet hear the typical noises a baby makes – you can try playing videos from YouTube so that the pet becomes accustomed to new sounds. Use the baby lotion or baby powder you’re planning to use on the baby so that the pets gets exposed to new smells, too.

First encounter. When the baby is born, let your pet smell something with the baby’s smell before actually introducing the pet to the baby. For instance, bring the baby blanket or clothes and let the pet take time to smell it. After that you can bring the baby in and let the pet smell in from a safe distance. Monitor all pet-baby interactions. never let your baby unattended within your pet’s reach no matter what breed it is and how long it has been in the family.
